Setting up a Dell 30" monitor with Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop ver. 10
|
Update 24.04.2007: Tried the new OpenSuse ver. 10.2, and this build had no problems setting the resolution at 2560x1600. Automatically selected during the install. Setup for Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop ver. 10 w/Dell 30" screen (updated 31.12.2006): * Run the installation program as usual. * In the end of the installation in Hardware configuration, the problem begins if you dont test the system. When installing with the Dell 30" connected, the installation program detected the Monitor name, ratio (16/10) but not the resolution. The selected resolution was set to 800x600 pixels but it was not passible to test it (when clicking the test link nothing happened). Tried with different resolutions with no luck. After many different possibilities, I used the following configuration: * Monitor: Sony SDM-P234 (Digital) * Size: 21.1 inches * Aspect ratio: 16/10 * Resolution: 1024x768 * Color depth: 24 bit All other settings gave me a message that the configuration was wrong, and I ended up on a black screen/command prompt (I dont have enough knowlege about Linux to do too much in the command prompt!). The settings above is just to be able to open the graphical interface and to replace the xorg.conf file with the correct settings for a 2560x1600 setup. * Go to the etc/x11/ folder and open the xorg.conf file (rightclick the file and select Open With, KWrite to see the settings. Not really neccesary, but if you use Linux, you're probably a bit curious on how things work! * Delete the xorg.conf file (etc/x11/xorg.conf) and copy the one below here to the same folder and with the same name. * Restart the system and the resolution of 2560x1600 should work. Note: You need a Dual-DVI card to use this resolution. I use a nVidia Geforce 7600 GS card (256Mb ram). And a Dual-DVI card is not a card with two connections. The Dual-DVI is two graphic processors in the card. If you have a running system, you may just copy the file below into the etc/x11/ folder. I have not teste this setup on other systems than Novell Suse Enterprise Desktop ver. 10. Note that I'm not a Linux Expert, and there may be many easier ways to do this, but this is the solution I found after struggeling with this for some time. I haven't found any good explanations on the Internet so far. So, if you are a Linux geek, don't tell me I'm stupid. This is the best I could to, and it works! Below is the file as used in my system (the file starts after the horizontal line and ends before the next horizontal line. You may copy this file and paste the text into a document called xorg.conf and saved as specified above.
